Download this free A1–A2 grammar worksheet PDF for English learners and teachers. This lesson helps students practise past simple questions and negatives using did, didn’t, was and were.
Students learn how to make past simple yes/no questions with Did + subject + base verb? The worksheet gives clear examples such as Did you watch the film? and Did she call you? Students also practise wh-questions with Question word + did + subject + base verb?, such as Where did they go? and What did he buy?
The worksheet also teaches past simple negatives with did not / didn’t + base verb. Students practise examples such as I did not watch TV and She didn’t finish the homework. The key point is that after did and didn’t, students must use the base verb, not the past form: Did you go?, not Did you went?
Students also practise past questions and negatives with be. The worksheet teaches Was / Were + subject…?, such as Was it cold? and Were they at home?, and negative forms such as I wasn’t late and They weren’t ready. This helps students understand when to use did and when to use was / were.
The PDF includes a grammar focus section, past simple questions and negatives exercises, choose-the-correct-form practice, sentence matching, mistake correction, mini-dialogues, sentence rewriting, meaning-and-form practice, speaking questions, writing practice, vocabulary and grammar sentence practice, an error-checking challenge, useful reminders and a full answer key.
This worksheet can be used in one-to-one lessons, group classes, online English lessons, adult ESL lessons, EFL classes, homework or independent grammar practice.
