Download this free A2–B1 English worksheet PDF for English learners and teachers. This lesson explores competition, anger, poor sportsmanship and how people react when they lose.
The article describes a family problem involving a woman who becomes angry when she loses board games. She may throw game pieces aside or leave the room, and the reader worries that this behaviour could damage relationships.
Students read about how other family members react by laughing, hoping to reduce the tension. However, this may make the behaviour seem more acceptable and allow the problem to continue.
The worksheet also looks at a calmer way to deal with the situation. The advice is not to argue during an angry outburst, but to show that the behaviour is not acceptable and discuss the problem honestly later when everyone is calmer.
The discussion section gives students opportunities to talk about board games, sport, competition, anger, winning, losing and whether learning to accept defeat is an important life skill.
