Download this free B1–B2 grammar worksheet PDF for English learners and teachers. This lesson helps students practise reported speech in clear, practical English.
Students learn how to change direct speech into reported speech using common reporting verbs such as said, told and asked. The worksheet focuses on the main B1–B2 reported speech patterns students need for everyday English, exams, writing and speaking.
The worksheet teaches standard backshift after a past reporting verb. Students practise how present simple often changes to past simple, present continuous changes to past continuous, past simple and present perfect often change to past perfect, will changes to would, can changes to could and must usually changes to had to.
Students also practise the difference between say and tell. The worksheet shows that say is used without an object, as in She said that she was busy, while tell needs an object, as in She told me that she was busy. This helps students avoid common mistakes such as She told that she was busy and She said me that she was busy.
The lesson also covers reported questions, reported yes/no questions, reported requests and commands, pronoun changes and time-word changes. Students practise structures such as She asked where I lived, He asked if I was ready, She asked me to wait and He told us not to touch the screen.
The PDF includes a grammar focus section, reported speech exercises, choose-the-correct-form practice, sentence matching, mistake correction, mini-dialogues, direct speech to reported speech rewriting, reported question practice, speaking questions, writing practice, vocabulary practice, an error-checking challenge, useful reminders and a full answer key.
This worksheet can be used in one-to-one lessons, group classes, online English lessons, adult ESL lessons, EFL classes, homework or independent grammar practice.
