Download this free B2–C1 English worksheet PDF for English learners and teachers. This lesson explores unwanted gifts, social pressure, politeness and the expectations surrounding giving and receiving presents.
The article examines why an unwanted gift can turn a generous gesture into an uncomfortable social situation. Recipients may feel disappointment, resentment or guilt while trying to put on a brave face and react enthusiastically.
Students consider why people sometimes read too much into an inappropriate present. The article stresses that an awkward gift is not necessarily a deliberate insult and that the giver’s intention may simply have been kind.
The worksheet also looks at the pressure to keep up appearances. Some people hide their frustration, while others make a fuss and embarrass everyone. The article recommends offering sincere thanks for the thought behind the present without pretending to admire the object itself.
Students also explore what should happen after a gift has been given. The worksheet argues that recipients should have the autonomy to exchange an unwanted item or give it away rather than feeling obliged to keep it indefinitely.
The final part of the article considers more difficult situations in which a present feels deliberately critical or hurtful. Instead of confronting the giver publicly, people are encouraged to bring up the issue privately later and try to clear the air.
