Free B2–C1 Grammar Worksheet PDF: Had Better, Would Rather and It’s Time

Download this free B2–C1 grammar worksheet PDF for English learners and teachers. This lesson helps students practise had better, would rather and it’s time / high time for strong advice, preferences and actions that are due or overdue.

Students learn how to use had better + base verb for strong advice or warnings where there may be a real consequence. The worksheet includes affirmative and negative forms such as You’d better leave now and You’d better not park there, and reinforces that to is not used after had better.

The worksheet also teaches would rather for present, future and past preferences. Students practise would rather + base verb for their own present or future preferences, as in I’d rather take the train tomorrow, as well as would rather not + base verb for negative preferences.

Students then practise preferences about another person’s actions. For present or future situations, the worksheet uses would rather + subject + past simple, as in I’d rather she joined us next week. For a different action in the past, students use would rather + subject + past perfect, as in I’d rather you had waited for my reply.

The lesson also covers would rather have + past participle for a speaker’s own different past preference. Students practise sentences such as I’d rather have ordered the vegetarian option and learn how this differs from preferences about another person’s past behaviour.

Students also learn several ways to use it’s time. Neutral forms include it’s time + to + base verb and it’s time for + person + to + base verb, while it’s time / high time + subject + past simple expresses that an action is due or already overdue. Examples include It’s time to check in, It’s time for Maya to call and It’s high time the airline explained the delays.

The worksheet also focuses on important B2–C1 distinctions, including the stronger meaning of had better compared with should, the difference between it’s time and it’s high time, the use of past forms for present or future meaning after would rather + subject and it’s time + subject, and questions such as Would you rather cook at home or eat out?

The PDF includes a grammar focus section, choose-the-best-form practice, sentence-to-reason matching, mistake correction, controlled sentence completion, rewriting tasks, meaning-and-structure practice, speaking questions, sentence-writing practice, integrated grammar production, an error-checking challenge, useful reminders and a full answer key.

This worksheet can be used in one-to-one lessons, group classes, online English lessons, adult ESL lessons, EFL classes, exam preparation, business English lessons, homework or independent grammar practice.

The main classroom point is to use the correct verb form after each structure: a base verb after had better and an own present/future would rather, past simple after would rather + subject for another person’s present or future action, past perfect for another person’s past action, and a past form after it’s time / high time + subject when an action is due or overdue.
